One of the photos submitted by WHAS's Joe Elliott (page 14 of Photos) shows Alan White alongside Johnny Randolph on WAKY's final night before switching to a beautiful music format.
I met Alan at the University of Louisville's campus radio station (WXKE) in 1974 (along with the late Rusty Rodgers) and later worked with him at WQHI (Hi-95) and at Elizabethtown's WQXE (Quicksie). He did not survive Hi-95's transformation to QMF, but did have a long run with the Kentucky News Network and eventually wound up with WAKY right up to its final night. He also worked at WINN at one point, but such is the nomadic nature of being a radio jock.
Alan had one of the smoothest sounding voices in the business and just recently left broadcasting to become a licensed master electrician. It sometimes takes years, but eventually most of us do go on to get real jobs; especially, with the way radio is today. I regard Alan as a close friend and wish him well with his new endeavor.
During Alan's time at U of L's WXKE, we both knew Mike Marvin (WSAE) and Alan has worked with Les Cook (PD at WSAE) when Les went by the name of Jonathan Stone (not the one of WKLO fame) at Hi-95.
And for those of you who enjoy "small world stories"... Alan grew up right across the street from Mason Lee Dixon. That's right. The Whites and the Bratchers lived across the street from each other on Berkeley Square which no longer exists due to the expansion of Standiford Field. Ironic, that both would grow to seek a career in broadcasting and work at the legendary WAKY at one time or another.
