The WAKY singover jingle, which was recently submitted by Jason O'Brian, reminded me of a time back in 1971 when, for a very short period of time, some of the hits featured astonishing customized singover intros. But, unlike the one submitted by Jason O'Brian, these singover intros sounded as if they were in the actual voice of the song's lead vocalist. It's been 34 years and my somewhat photographic memory of WAKY isn't what it used to be. But, I can remember at least 2 songs that featured such an intro. The first was Tommy James & The Shondells with "Draggin' The Line." I'm not sure of the exact words, but the customized intro was something like, "Diggin' the snow and the bright sunshine - listenin' to the big 79." It sounded as if Tommy were singing the words, himself, and it led directly into the actual lyrics of the song ("Makin' a livin' the old hard way - takin' and giving by day by day, etc.") The second tune which comes to mind is Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Go Down Gamblin'." In a voice that sounded to be that of David Clayton Thomas, the words over the intro were, "You never go down gamblin' with W-A-K-Y" which led into the actual lyrics, "Born a natural loser - can't recall just where, etc." Yes. My mind is a freak of nature. I can remember such trivial events as this, but can't remember to set the trash out on Tuesday nights. ;D If you remember these customized intros (or others) and have any info as to whom those voices actually belonged, please share it here.

I remember there were customized lyrics to the song "One Fine Morning" by Lighthouse. The lyrics went (over the horn intro): "One fine morning girl I wake up, WAKY on my radio, wake up every day with WAKY, it's the only way to go."

I interviewed Jason O'Brien tonight (WAKY night jock in the early 70s), who says he's got a reel full of all the WAKY singover jingles. As soon as he finds it, he promises to contribute.
I'm a jingle freak -- and the singovers are some of my favorites, especially when they're done well.

I just remembered another one. Chase had a very energetic song called "Get It On," and the customized singover lyrics were something like, "Got to get it on - WAKY got to get it on," which sounded like the lead singer's voice (Bill Chase, himself?) which led directly into the beginning of the true lyrics, "I need your lovin' - I said I want your lovin' etc." It will really be something to hear those again if they're on the tapes that Jason O'Brian is currently searching for. Wow! Another one just came to mind. I believe there was a customized intro on Joe Kocker's "High Time We Went." There must be a bunch of these tunes and they all appear to be from 1971. Note: In writing this, I had to intentionally spell Joe's last name with a "K" rather than a "C" because the board thought I was trying to spell a dirty word. ;D

Wow! The customized singover intros are now on line. I was dead on with the intro for Blood, Sweat & Tears. I also heard Chase's intro and the Lighthouse intro, which was mentioned earlier in this thread. I never realized how much the intro for Lighthouse's "One Fine Morning" sounds like The Rugby's "You, I" starting up. Threw me for a moment.

To this day, I cannot hear "Draggin' The Line" without hearing 79 in my head. I've even caught myself in the car singing in the 79 when the song plays.

I have the same problem. I listen to an oldies station which plays a lot of the tunes that were popular on WAKY during the early '70s. As I drive around, I mentally jock the intros to the songs (I'm a strange bird) and love to fill the intros, flawlessly. By the way, it's a shame that many of the squeaky-voiced, so-called jocks on the air today cannot even fill an intro without either stepping on the vocal or falling far short of doing so. The fine art of filling an intro did so much for the energy that was WAKY in its hey-day. Anyway, like you (Mike Griffin) there are some tunes that bring to mind the old singover jingles and I generally just do those in my head as the respective intro is playing.
Well. I'm late for my appointment with my therapist, so I'd better end here. ;D
