We have an active thread that has us thinking of songs that make us think of the Super 79. Along those same lines, what are/were some movies back in the day that made you think of WAKY? More than likely they had music, but just to get your minds harking back once again to the kinder, simpler days what are some of those movies? I'll just name a couple, as we'd like to get e-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y involved! I'll start off with Mr. Holland's Opus (fairly recent but an excellent soundtrack), Forrest Gump and American Graffiti. And while we're at it, how about TV shows as well. I know it's not likely a movie or series makes you think of the station exactly, but maybe they kept you listening to that great music when you were away from a radio!

I remember one summer getting sick and having to stay in bed all day long (I was about 11 years old). Of course I was listening to WAKY in bed since I had no TV in my room as kids have today.
Well, it was the summer the Exorcist was a big hit and Tubular Bells was heavily in the TOP 40 rotation, and because I was in bed all that day reasting, I couldn't sleep that night.
So there I was wide awake in the middle of the night hearing thinking of all the hype that movie had around at the time and after hearing that spooky song a million times I was convinced that --you got it --I was becoming possessed by Captain Howdy. Every house settling sound I heard was Lucifer in the attic sizing up my soul.
Strangly, Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" and some lady with a very high voice singing "Loving You" were also being played alot that summer and they both weirdly mixed into my nighmares. (Actually the rest of that summer I was under Satan's spell)
Even today when I hear those songs I go back to that summer and that movie, and, of course, WAKY.
WAKY was there in the good times and the bad.

I've discussed this elsewhere, but the movie that always brings WAKY to mind for me is the 1972 release of 'Slaughterhouse 5' which starred Michael Sacks and was based on the novel by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Back in 1972, WAKY sponsored a special showing of the movie at the Showcase Cinemas on Bardstown Road and none other than Mason Lee Dixon was our host. He addressed those of us in attendance before, and I believe after, the showing. 'Slaughterhouse 5' is one of those movies that makes you sit up and exclaim, "What the... ?" Looking back, I find it quite appropriate that Mason Dixon was the host of that special presentation. For those of us who know Mason, he is one of those unique & colorful souls that makes you sit up and exclaim... "What the... ?" May he never change (and he probably won't).

Another movie WAKY had a premere of was "Enter The Dragon."
"Nashville" also reminds me of WAKY. The movie was bad but Gary Burbank did commercials for it.
X rated movies like "Behind the Green Door" and "Deep Throat" also remind me of WAKY. For a time a lot of movie advertising was done by Theatair-X in Clarksville and by several of the movie houses along the River City mall that had fallen on hard times (no pun intended).
The proliferation of X-Rated movies and their advertisement on WAKY also influenced Dude Walker's question of the day to include such topics as oral sex. Pretty out there for an on-air topic in the early '70s in Louisville, Ky.

I bought the video to "Radio", a movie I'd seen twice and it just hit me that almost the entire soundtrack conures up memories of the Super 79. Songs by Grand Funk, Al Green, the Doobies, and so on. The movie is excellent and is well worth renting if you have not yet seen it. The soundtrack CD is a must have, if you do not already have the songs.
