There's been yet another call letter change at 790 in Louisville. The station, still owned by Clear Channel and still an all-sports outlet, is now WKRD. The "KRD" is supposed to stand for "Cardinal." (To me it looks like "krud.")
From http://www.CardinalSports.com:
The University of Louisville will become one of the first colleges in America to hold its own college sports radio station when local station WXXA changes its call letters to WKRD Wednesday night at midnight. The station, which previously billed itself as Xtra Sports 790, will continue to be a Fox Sports Radio affiliate, but will also supplement its current broadcast with U of L sports starting this Fall.
With limited call letters available nationwide, the WKRD call letters were originally used for a Clear Channel television station in Albany, N.Y., but have been co-opted for the Louisville radio station's new focus.
The dedicated radio station came about when Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich, U of L and Nelligan Sports Marketing agreed to a new contract with ClearChannel Communications earlier this year that included satellite stations throughout the commonwealth of Kentucky and even broadcast of Louisville football and basketball games from radio stations in Cincinnati, Oh. and Indianapolis, In.
Under the agreement, U of L retains priority status on 50,000 watt station 840 WHAS through the 2007 season for football and basketball. ClearChannel will include additional broadcasts on 790 AM of women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and other Cardinal Sports starting Thursday, August 18, 2005.
The station will continue to run national Fox Radio programs like the Jim Rome show and will also continue local programming like the Bob Valvano Show each weekday morning from 8 to 10 a.m., the Joe B. and Denny Show each weekday morning from 10 to Noon and other local programming like the Louisville SportsReport and CardinalSports.com radio show each Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m.
The coaches shows for both football coach Bobby Petrino and basketball coach Rick Pitino will still be carried live on 840 WHAS until the current contract expires in 2007, and then will likely still be on the station depending on scheduling. WKRD might also host coaches shows for women's basketball coach Tom Collen and volleyball coach Leonid Yelin along with several other sports.
