At the WAKY-WKLO mini-reunion (last July) I met former WAKY general manager, Don Meyers. I had heard his name quite often when I was hanging out in the studios back in '72, but had never seen or talked with him until that night at the mini-reunion.
As he addressed the crowd I couldn't help but feel that his voice was very familiar. But how? I had never met him, never spoke with him and he certainly wasn't a jock on WAKY at the time. Still, his voice and the way in which he spoke were all too familiar.
That night as I made the drive from Louisville back to my home in Venice, Florida, it suddenly dawned on me where I had heard his voice before. Some of the special announcements that were heard on WAKY in the early '70s were actually voiced by Don Meyers.
During a license renewal period it was Don's voice that informed listeners that WAKY had filed with the FCC for renewal of its license and that files were available for inspection during regular business hours at 554-558 South 4th Street, etc., etc.
I'm also certain that I had heard his voice speaking on behalf of the staff & management of WAKY as he wished all a very happy holiday season. He may have even said "Merry Christmas," since it was OK to actually say it, but I don't remember it that way.
Age brings about changes to our voices and I noted that some of the legendary jocks of that time have a different sound today. And then there are those, such as WKLO's Bo Brady, who sound just as they did back then. Who knows why some change and others don't.
It was good to finally meet Don Meyers. He is credited with supporting Johnny Randolph's programming & promotional ideas at WAKY. And we all know the rest of that story. Don also had a pretty good voice for those special announcements on WAKY. He still does.
Don Meyers can be seen & heard at the WAKY-WKLO mini-reunion which is available on this site as a video stream and on DVD.
