There is plenty to document WHAS's role in that infamous weather day. I know that Jeff Douglas' show is still around from that afternoon and I have tapes from later that afternoon and evening with Bryon Crawford, Chuck Taylor and Milton Metz. But, I am suprised that their isn't any audio from WAKY or WKLO from that day.
Just curious how both were effected on that day?

I was watching Andy Griffith upstairs with a friend, I was 12 years old. My mom and some neighbors were in my basement yelling for us to go downstairs. We never went as we watched WHAS TV and its many interruptions about a tornado. The sun was actually out most of the time where I lived in PRP.

There is a chapter in Dave Inman's "4th Street Nights The Golden Age of Louisville Top 40 Radio" in CHAPTER 7: THE TORNADO OF ’74 AND THE EARTHQUAKE OF ’76. He repeats several excerpts of Dick Gilbert's report from the helicopter:
“The, uh, whole park over here – Seneca and Cherokee Park – there aren’t any trees left in Cherokee Park. It has ripped everything down here by the golf course and over to the tunnel.”
Amazing

Yeah, Dick Glibert was following the tornado in the WHAS traffic copter. I think he got some awards for reporting because of that, even though he wasn't a "real" reporter.

Does anyone know where an MP3 or something of Dick Gilbert on that day can be found?

How's that for a coincidence...I was just looking at the site that kevin502 posted, then thought I'd cruise on over here to 79WAKY.com and see if there was anything about that dark day in 1974, and lo & behold, here it is!
I listened to that clip of Dick Gilbert, and also watched the two clips from WHAS TV (I had forgotten that Ken Rowland was there before he went to WLKY), and found them to be very insightful to someone who was just three years old at the time, and lived in the Shively area, where none of the action from that day happened. It would indeed be interesting to hear how things went at WAKY & WKLO on that day.
I know it wasn't at the time, but now, hearing the part on the WHAS recording of the guy at the Weather Service was sort of funny. He actually took the time to say "I'm goin', goodbye!" before he hung up the phone! I'm not sure I would have even bothered hanging up if I saw a tornado heading for me!

I don't remember what channel it was, but I saw a live interview with a fellow at the Fairgrounds. He said there was all kinds of #@$% flying around. They cut the #@$% out for the evening news.

We just posted "Day of Disaster" -- the WHAS April 3, 1974 retrospective that aired in 1975. Thanks to Matt Sorrell for providing a great-sounding copy of this well-produced piece...and to Byron Crawford and Glen Bastin for their comments on the special.

A song that always reminds me of that fateful day every time I hear it, is Chicago's "(I've Been) Searching So Long", I guess obviously because it was climbing the charts and peaked at #4 that week. The string section/synth buildup was probably what was playing the instant I looked out the window and saw that black ominous cloud rolling out from behind the trees.
Although not released until later that fall, "Wishing You Were Here", also by Chicago, reminds me of the tornado as well-probably because of the eerie harmony augmented by 3 of the Beach Boys.

The Wings "Band on the Run" seems to be in my memory around this time, and also a song called" Jet" by some group that I can't remember the name.

I can't stop myself? I believe that's a country tune by Patty Loveless. *pH-noRk!*
