Just saw a post where Terry Decker has the original board from WAKY's days in the Kentucky Home Life Building. I made my first scoped demo-tapes on that board when it was housed in the "small" production room in the studios on 4th street. Photos of the board can be seen on this site (Jim Brand is sitting at the board on page 5) and there's a great shot of it on Terry Decker's site at:

I believe that board was a Gates. Harris-Gates Intertype appeared to have a monopoly on manufacturing control board consoles in that day. In fact, the larger boards in WAKY's main studio and the "large" production room were built by Gates. The model was known as the Gatesway II and can be seen clearly in the image of Mason Lee Dixon, near the bottom of page 4, in photos. The big funky knobs, or pots (potentiometers) were a trademark of Gates and even WKLO used a Gates board. I'm not sure, but I believe the WKLO model was either the President or the Executive model. It was one or the other.
Question: Whatever became of the two Gatesway II consoles? One was in the main studio and the other was in the main (or large) production room during the early '70s. Both were identical models and can be seen from several angles in the photos on this site. Last I heard, they had both been relocated to the newsroom area after being replaced by the more popular glide-path control consoles. It's possible that one, or both, may be in the home of Pete Boyce, an engineer who was known for collecting such items. I'm told his home resembles the Smithsonian. ;D Just kidding, Pete. If anyone knows, please post. Thanks.
