Jim Bright from Mount Washington, KY writes:
I remember a promo on WAKY where the last line was, "Jack Sanders we love you and Jerry Barr too." Who was Jerry Barr?
Does anybody know?

I remember an incident back in the 60's where Jack Sanders and another WAKY DJ were caught in a hotel room with a couple of underage girls. I believe it ended their careers in Louisville. I'm not sure, but I think the other DJ might have been Jerry Barr.

Fred Furd is correct. "Jumping" Jack Sanders and Jerry Barr had to leave town after the incident with the girls. Sanders finally ended up in Memphis. No idea what happened to Barr.

I also was aware of the incident with the two girls, however, I have not been able to find any facts to support it. Thanks for the posts. It is great to talk to folk who remember the greatest radio station in the world.

IIRC, Sanders did what we now call the afternoon drive time shift, and Barr's show followed, or else was the show that followed the show that followed Sanders'.

I interviewed Jim Brand today. (He was WAKY's PD between 1960 and 1966.) I asked him about the "underage girls incident." He said Jerry Barr had nothing to do with it. Jack Sanders was involved though...and that's what led to Jack being taken off the air at WAKY. You'll, of course, be able to hear the whole story when the interview has been edited and posted.

Look forward to the interview...I seem to remember the "joke line of the moment" was something like "Jerry Barr behind bars". I'm curious to see how he became associated so closely, at least in some people's minds, with that whole incident.

Well, here's a "taste" from Jim Brand:
"...the Jack Sander's episode with the young girl should be boiled down to the fact that Jack was accused by the girl after she was nabbed in a vice sting."
(Evidently she was a prostitute -- 15 or 16 years old.)
"...the press surrounding the case, brought Jack's career to an end."
Jack Sanders' brother-in-law, Tom D. Kennedy, is working on a piece on Jack for the WAKY Tribute Website. And we're furiously trying to find airchecks of Jack and the other McLendon-era jocks.

Jack Sanders' brother-in-law, Tom D. Kennedy, is working on a piece on Jack for the WAKY Tribute Website. And we're furiously trying to find airchecks of Jack and the other McLendon-era jocks. They are probably stored with all of those lost Sun recordings by Elvis. Seriously, I read in another post where a great deal of material was trashed when WAKY moved to 4th Street. I would imagine that there would have been some Jack Sanders airchecks among the trash. Maybe someone fished some of this stuff out of the dumpster, but I'm not optimistic that anyone possessed enough of a sense of history at the time to save anything. But, then again, some pretty incredible stuff has shown up on this website...
