Hey ! Great CJ article, and great web-site ! Those were indeed fantastic days. It's a shame we can't go back !
I was hoping someone could remember the name of the WAKY news director back then. His name was "Bill" (something,I think, maybe Bill Little ?) He drove all over town in a beat up car, with a controversal Police radio, and a Sony cassette recorder, usually beating the cops to a scene, and be taping when they got there. Then he'd drop the tape at the station, and go back on the hunt for breaking news !
In the 60's, I was downtown waiting in the crowd for Astronaut Gus Grissom to arrive on the Courthouse steps for a personal appearance. I asked a policeman that I knew, when would they arrivefrom the airport. He said he didn't know. Then he turned back to me and said, "There's the WAKY newsman, and he's usually about five minutes ahead of action. Sure enough, five minutes later, the limo with Grissom, the Mayor, and others drove up !
Anyway, I heard, years later, that "Bill" was the head of news for one of the big networks, like CBS or NBC. Does TEXTanyone know more about that ?

Hey im from Gus Grissom's hometown which is Mitchell,Ind. How would a person get a hold of information about when Gus came to Louisville. Here in Mitchell we have a Museum about Grissom & that would be something that could be put into the displays of the museum. Yes the days & decades of WAKY were some the best radio ever in Kentucky & Southern Indiana. Even here in Mitchell if you talk to anyone 40 or above they will tell you that WAKY was the station they listened to for the music. Oh how sweet it would be if AM Radio would drop "Talk Radio" & go back to the way it was. Radio that made you feel good not mad or depressed.
