Steve Carrico writes on April 12:
AWESOME SITE & GREAT IDEA!
I have fond memories of WAKY and one specific event in general. I was wondering if you recall the date of this sponsored gig by WAKY. Maybe not as I see you began your love of WAKY in 1970. This happened sometime in '67 or '68.
I remember so well because it was my first date, actually puppy love date (not a real one as I was only 12 or 13). Me and a young lady (really young as we were both the same age) walked to the Showcase Cinema's on Bardstown Rd. for what I believe was WAKY's 13th anniversary. It was a "free" showing of "True Grit" -- the movie with John Wayne and Glen Campbell. I recall we were given (By WAKY) a free 45 record of "Where's The Playground Suzie" By Glen C.
I think this was in the days of Weird Beard. Very cool memory but I am not sure of the exact date or other key WAKY personnel that were involved. Does anyone have any details on this event at the Cinemas? Perhaps you too were there??
I just found the site and have not had a chance to drill down to all the details of the site. I am looking forward to reminiscing back in time.
Lastly, I have great memories of listening to Bill Bailey on the school bus in the early '70s on the way to St X High here in Lou.
Thanks again and keep the good stuff coming. If you know anything about this 13th anniversary party, please advise.

'True Grit' was released in 1969 and Glen Campbell's 'Where's the Playground, Susie' peaked around 26 on the charts in that year, so I'm thinking this event did not center around WAKY's 13 anniversary. The station (formerly WGRC) became WAKY in 1958, so it wasn't quite 13 years old.
WAKY's 13th anniversary was in 1971. The 13th birthday party was to be held at the Iroquois Amphitheater, but it was rained out really bad. It was there that I first met the Weird Beard, after having spent most of that summer doing on-air skits with him via the WAKY request line. He knew me as "Telephone Travis" because I would call up and record stuff on the request line that he could possibly work with on the air, and he did. He would play the recordings back and stop them at different points to inject some weirdness and then resume the recording. It sounded as if we were having a two-way phone discussion on the air. He often fit the recordings onto the intro of songs and soon others were calling and recording stuff that he could work with. It was a great time.
The early '70s was my time as an interactive listener of the big 79, and the only event that I can recall at the Showcase Cinemas was when Mason Lee Dixon presented Kurt Vonnegut's 'Slaughterhouse 5' at the theater. That was sometime in 1972. I was in attendance and Mason actually addressed the audience before the movie started. That's all I can recall, but maybe your post will ring a bell for someone else. Just keep checking back with the board.

Travis, THANKS very much for your reply. Great bit of trivia about you and the Beard. Now that you rattled my brain, I guess it could have been 11th anniversary (that would fit the time line better). I do recall WAKY promoting as part of an anniversary celebration of some type. I am sure someone will remember as this was quite a big gig that they put together. I do recall Weird Beard being there as well. I hope someone can figure it out ?
