Lester's post (WAKY Dance Cruise) reminded me of the old WAKY Jock Hop promos that were heard so often on the big 79. It may be worthwhile for Les Cook to look into retrieving the musical beds that were used on those promos and promote the outings of the current WAKY jocks in the same manner. Anyone who grew up with the big 79 will certainly recognize the style.
clap, clap... clap, clap, clap... clap, clap, clap, clap, Let's GO! "Here's where you'll find the big one-oh-three-five jocks! Wednesday it's blah, blah, blah and Les Cook appear. Thursday, Mike Marvin appears at blah, blah, blah, to answer your oldies questions. Friday it's live music with blah, blah, blah along with Les Cook and Johnny Randolph. And Saturday the WAKY jocks gather on the Star of Louisville for a dance cruise with live music and great food. Commercial paid appearances with the WAKY one-oh-three-five jocks!" ("because they're worth it" is optional)
Interesting enough, Johnny Randolph was generally the voice heard on those old Jock Hop promos. Hhmmm.

It seems like I remember them also saying "Here's where you'll find the Waky DJs"... Club 68 in Lebanon, being one of the most popular places in the late 60s and early 70s.

"Because They're Worth It" I do not believe was optional at the time. It may have to do with Payola which was something in those days. I believe it was Jim Brand or Bill Crisp that coined the phase, along with the jingle made which added to the legal stuff. Both of you are correct about the wording and "Let's GO" production bed. Memories do come back. ;D I believe this portion was in the late 60's.

The WAKY Jock Hop promos did vary in the way that they started and ended. The most consistent lines were "Here's where you'll find the..." at the beginning and "Commercial paid appearances with the... " at the end. Other than that, the start and ending did vary. "Here's where you'll find the big 79 DJs" or "the big 79 jocks" or "the WAKY DJs." Depending on how the jocks were referenced at the beginning of the promo determined how they would be referenced at the end. "Commercial paid appearances with the big 79 DJs" or "79 jocks" etc.
I just recently heard another variation while listening to an aircheck of the Weird Beard from November of 1968. "The Boss Jocks are everywhere" is how it started and ended with "Paid commercial appearances with the WAKY Boss Jocks." Johnny Randolph voiced the promo and "Let's Go" was the bed. It seems like everything was "Boss" at WAKY in 1968. WAKY Boss Jocks, Boss 30 Survey, Boss 30 countdown, etc.
The musical beds used on the WAKY Jock Hop promos varied as well, but I can only think of two. "Let's Go" is one, but I don't know the name of the other which sounded as if it had been taken from a jingle package. There were voices chanting along with the music and while I can clearly hear it in my head I can't describe it here. Ben, would you know?

You're right on again Travis! Reviving that promo is on the short list. This is a fun project and the responce from the people has been overwhelming.

I just did a post regarding the latest Weird Beard aircheck and was reminded of Bob Todd's "X Years Ago Today" stagers that were a big part of WAKY's sound at the time. I was thinking it would be cool to have such stagers on the new WAKY, but now I'm not so sure. Bob Todd's stagers only had to go back about 15 years, but if they were to be done today they would have to go back 35 to 49 years (if you consider that WAKY went on the air in 1958). Can you imagine how the stagers would come across today? *BoOm* "Forty-Five Years Ago Today" I'm not so sure that as a listener I would want to be reminded that a favorite tune that I grew up with was now 45 or even 35 years old. It's probably best not to go there with the new WAKY. Besides, where you gonna get a voice like Bob Todd's to voice them?

How about adopting George Carlin's: "Solid Gold to make you feel old."
