I've been asked to be a guest DJ on the new 103-5 WAKY while I'm in Kentucky next month -- and of course, I said yes.
I'll be on Wednesday, August 15 from 1p-3p warming up everybody for Johnny Randolph.
If you're in the area, you're invited to listen and see if I have what it takes to be a real WAKY jock. [I'm going to see if PD Les Cook will let me bring my 45s from home. :-)]

Good for you, John! This will be about as close as you can get to your dream...that was, to have been a jock on WAKY, huh? And why not? Just having the name 'honorary WAKY/WKLO employee' isn't enough. Show us your stuff, John!

Way to go John . As a former employee of "The Mighty 790" and "Radio WKLO", it would be great to hear an "honorary" employee of both great and legendary radio stations . Since WAKY-FM does not stream the audio, I hope you will have the "Skimmed or scoped" version for us that will not be in the area, on the site ;D. Thank you for everything!

Yep! If it gets recorded, it will be online -- no matter how bad I stink up the place.

Yep! If it gets recorded, it will be online -- no matter how bad I stink up the place. As this would be the only way alot of us, even locals, will hear it, I look forward to it! If it's anything like your show on Sunny 96.9 it will be polished, professional and with your adaptability, appropriately 'WAKY'!

If you're in the area, tune into WAKY-FM 1-3 today...John sounds like a kid on Christmas Day. He sounds great! Too bad he's not a fixture there...after today I'll probably go back to my 'only at Dairy Queen' mode.

I had a chance to listen to JQ for most of his airshift yesterday. The folks down in Charleston sure have a great air personality in John Quincy.

Thanks so much for the nice words guys. I had a BLAST! I'll put up a scoped aircheck when I get the chance.
Bill Walters, Les Cook (who's got to be one of the hardest working guys in Louisville radio), Fast Eddie Lee (who used to play with Tom Dooley and the Lovelites), Michael Marvin, Rene the GM and all the other folks I met at the station were just super. Thank you all for that wonderful opportunity to finally be on WAKY.
It was a real treat to watch Johnny Randolph work live too. What a pro. He makes it seem effortless.
To any and all ex-WAKY jocks who read this...I know PD Les Cook would love to have you do a guest spot on 103-5 WAKY too. By all means, do it. It will the most fun you've had since Jimmy Carter was president!

Was there a camera present in the studios? Speaking of which, if you haven't seen it yet. There is a page of photos on the new WAKY 103-5 that were taken on the day KOOL became WAKY. There are a lot of great shots of Johnny Randolph, Les Cook and others in what appears to be a very nice studio setup. A direct link to the photos is just below. Clicking on it will launch over 163 items, so a broadband connection is recommended. www.waky1035.com/WAKY103.5LaunchDay.aspIf a camera was present during John Quincy's guest appearance, perhaps Les will get those on the site as well.

Photo forthcoming. Scoped aircheck now: 79waky.com/audio/WAKY-FM-JohnQuincy(2007-08-15).mp3You'll need to copy and paste the ENTIRE LINK all the way to "mp3" into your browser's address bar. Clicking on it WON'T work here. The aircheck is 22:47 long. The file is 7.82 MB.

Wow! John Quincy truly is a WAKY DJ. He actually had fun with the intros... the extros... the jingles... the spots... everything! It was like listening to many of the airchecks that are available here. He can certainly fill an intro with precision, which has become a vanishing art form (if you will) in the way that radio is done today.
And was that the Unique's "All These Things" I heard at 6 minutes into the aircheck? And did I have anything to do with that? Les Cook and the gang at WAKY are sure doing a fine job of getting the music right.
John pretty much kept everything he said confined within intros & extros, which was actually required back in the day under Randolph's formatics, but we also got a chance to hear reverb, or echo, on the microphone whenever he spoke dry. Could it be that we have finally learned the location of the huge Grundy plate reverb system which was last known to have been walled-up in the rear of WAKY's old 4th Street studios?
And what a great job with the customized singover intro to Lighthouse's "One Fine Morning" and even more so with the way John bobbed in & out of the intro as it played (19 minutes into the aircheck). Again, he had fun with it. And as those of us who grew up with WAKY know, jocks having fun on the radio can be quite contagious to their listeners.
John Quincy sounded as if he were, indeed, higher than Mason Lee Dixon on a Saturday night (good one, John).

Hi to all my wackie friends, Les Cook here to thank John Quincy for a great performance on 103-5 WAKY. John, you're as smooth as silk and your content is very creative. The first break floored us all and the way you turned the Lighthouse sing over into a plug for the morning show was slick!!! It was great to meet you and you are always welcome to come in and do it again! The party was fun too. I got to meet some great folks and hang out with some old friends. John, thank you for this wonderful web site and for all the help you have given us at W & B Broadcasting. WAKY's back and you were a big part of it! L
