In March the new 103.5 WAKY signed the papers with Churchill Downs to have the WAKY 50th anniversary picnic in the track infield on July 4th. (The date is actually within a few days of when 79 WAKY signed on in 1958). So far all the big local bands like the Monarchs, Crushed Velvet, etc. are on board. Tom Dooley is even getting the Lovelights back together for the event.
The station is running several several different liners of folks who worked at WAKY and WKLO saying "Happy Anniversary" and stuff like that. All former WAKY and WKLO on-air people (DJs, news, etc.) are encouraged to record something for the station either on the phone or in a studio (if you have access to one), as well as attend the event on July 4th.
Johnny Randolph recently visited Bill Bailey who said he'll be be at the picnic.
Please contact WAKY-FM PD Les Cook if you need more info or would like to record an ID. His e-mail is lcook@waky1035.com. The station's toll-free phone number is 888-766-1035.
While I'm not organizing a WAKY-WKLO get-together for this summer, I'm happy to pass along news about WAKY-FM's big party.
