Just when you think the supply of WAKY audio goodes has dried up...
This past Sunday I received this incredible e-mail from Chris Turner:
Hi John:
20 bucks bought a Banker's Box full of reels from WAKY on Friday. I found them at a Jeffersonville yard sale. The sellers had no connection to WAKY; they just bought the box lot at another yard sale several years ago and forgot about it.
It appears most of the reels belonged to Bob Boling, a/k/a/ weekend jock Bob Jansen (Jannsen)! (One of the "Where is he now?" guys).
There are several of his airchecks from 1969 & 70 from WAKY, some of his earlier efforts from WREY in New Albany, WJPS in Evansville and WORX in Madison, Ind., plus a complete Tom Watson newscast from 1969, a Farrell Smith aircheck from 1967 (sweet -- includes the "Platter Princess"), a PAMS/WLS Moog demo, "Funnybirds" syndicated comedy spots (Laugh-In type stuff) and some other things you'll like. There's also a clean and complete reel of the Beatles/"Is Paul Dead?" mystery show already mentioned on the website. I also saved late 60s Dodge, Sears and Coca-Cola spot reels for the jingles.
These items are yours. Just let me know your shipping address!
I'm a loyal user/fan of the WAKY and LKY Radio sites. I work as the news executive producer at WDRB Fox 41 (there since late 1995) and spent time at WHAS-TV from 1990-95. Several of my Fox 41 colleagues who grew up in Louisville remember WAKY fondly. We have the website playing in the newsroom at least once a week.
Back to Mr. Boling/Jansen/Jannsen: The box contained a letter from 1975 addressed to him at Muncie, Indiana. He used R. Ladd Boling then (likely his full name). His earlier aircheck tapes had an address and phone number for Charlestown, Ind., in Clark County, north of Louisville. He also did some work at WJPS as Roger W. Vanderbilt.
I spent four hours today listening these tapes on a perfectly working 25-year-old Tascam salvaged from the trash of another Louisville radio station a few years ago. A handful of the tapes now have broken splices -- and those are marked both by paper tags in the reels and by Post-It notes for you. May they be worthy additions to the WAKY tribute site!
It was SO cool to find these tapes this weekend! Enjoy!

The box of reels just arrived and the contents look awesome...even better than Chris described.
A great big five thousand watt non-directional 790 kilocycles thank you to Chris -- and to Bob Boling for saving all this stuff, wherever he may be.
Let the dubbing begin! (Honey, where are the extra Q-tips and head cleaner?)
