Just wanted to say thanks to John Quincy for starting the WAKY and WKLO sites. It's nice to know that these two stations will never be forgotten, and are a big part of Louisville's music history. Listening to the WAKY and WKLO airchecks, just gives me chills, they were both awesome.

Thanks -- it's been a real pleasure, and many times, more fun than actually being on the radio in the 21st Century! Of course, the sites wouldn't be what they are without the support and contributions (i.e., airchecks, photos, surveys, information, etc.) from former WAKY and WKLO employees and listeners. Thanks also to those who've contibuted financially to cover the sites' hosting fees and domain names.

Amen to that, John! Not much fun when you take all the fun away and give it to satellite jocks, Smartcaster & RIDZ!

What can I say??? Back in the late 60's to early seventies, I could DX daytime from about 90 air miles out... I was hooked (not only to radio but) to WAKY and knowing that one day I'd be jockin' somewhere in the eithar, I should take notes....Especially when Johnny Randolph ran things.... What a station (along with hearing WKLO when I'd visit my married brother in the metro).....No human could hold that "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO'Clock" but Coyote...And with the processing cranked up for him, he blended with the intensity of the music so well! I remember meeting Lee Masters when he was running Jaljapeno Broadcasting in El Paso (K-102 Country)...I'd thought I'd met GOD's radio guy! (I was across the street at Tabor's KINT-98).....

One thing about compressing audio as much as 30 dB, as was done at WAKY, is that the intros & extros not only sounded hot, but were balanced with the jock speaking over them. One of the problems I hear on FM stations, that are not nearly as compressed as WAKY was in those days, is that too often the jock has the intro potted too far down (or his mic too far up) which results in the intro (music) being barely audible. I have even been surprised by the lead vocals just jumping seemingly out of nowhere because I wasn't even aware that the jock was speaking over an intro.
The other extreme is that sometimes the music is too hot and one can barely make out what the jock is saying. In both cases, if the jock's headphones are very loud, he/she is not even aware of these problems because the music and their voice are both up front in their headphones. Coyote Calhoun was known for just pegging the VU meter on everything and just allowing the audio processors to deal with it. Worked very well. ;D
