Does anyone know why WAKY 103.5 is no longer streaming? If you go to their website, there is a Want Your Listen Live Button Back section at the top of the page that takes you to an e-mail request form. I was wondering if other stations that now stream my eventually discontinue this service because of the costs of bandwidth?

These are tough times and WAKY may be seeking justification for keeping the stream on line. Sending that email will help to show how many are listening and where they are listening from. If you enjoy WAKY's streaming audio and want the "Listen Live" button restored, click and send that email right away.

Yes. I talked to a couple of people at WAKY and they have said that they need to see how many people are using the stream they provide. There is a cost to stream it and the more people who respond they are using it, the more likely it will come back. If not enough people are using it, then the cost is not justified and it may not come back. It was stressed to me that the most important thing to include in the email is your city and state like the instruction on the web site says. Besides how many people, they are also trying to see from where and how far out they are reaching with it.
If they end up not bringing it back, I do wish they would consider increasing their transmit power, but that too has a cost to it. If nothing else, probably in the amount of electricity needed to send out a higher powered signal. I live in Lawrenceburg so I have to use a gain antenna to get the signal, but at work and in the car I have it all day and through my entire ride to and from work. I know a lot of people though that wish they could pick it up on their radio that are further than me from the broadcast tower. The feeling I am getting so far is that WAKY is defintely working hard to get out there to everyone but some of what it takes can be costly expecially if it is not getting used.
I hope they do bring it back because another avenue will be opening up soon that can utilize their stream. A couple of mobile media player companies are coming out with updated versions of their players soon that will allow cell phones and some other mobile devices to play these kinds of streams on them. The new Palm Pre is one of these in which an updated player version is going to be released that will be able to play the streaming type WAKY uses so it can even be listened to right from the cell phone without having to be near a computer when not in range of the signal.
Defintiely get those emails going (with your city and state) to let WAKY know you are listening to them and to let them know that their efforts and hard work to make WAKY's great station available to everyone is appreciated. I'm sure they realize there a lot of people who appreciate having WAKY back, but just like anyone who is working hard to provide something to people, I'm sure WAKY would really appreciate even more hearing all the personal comments telling them how much all they do to provide their great station for us is so greatly loved and appreciated.

Does anyone know the costs of streaming, given the bandwidth, RIAA and 24/7 factors? I find it absolutely astounding that Cheap Chan... er, uh.. Clear Channel streams many of their stations in this way, which leads me to believe that it isn't all that expensive, which may be totally misleading.

I like how when they do the all request lunch hour the songs are all from 1955-1974. Then when that is over it is back to playing 80's music. I like 80's music but it is not oldies to me and never will be. Am I just resenting the fact that I am getting old now? I never thought of 38 as old but when they call the music I grew up with "oldies" it drives me nuts. Still, WAKY is playing some good music and a better variety as well. I have been listening more of late.

I must admit that I was very surprised to find that the button had been restored (I believe on Monday) given the expense of streaming copyrighted music over the net.
WAKY first began streaming in November of last year, so I was thinking the stream was up for a possible renewal next month and perhaps the past couple of months had been spent trying to determine whether it would be worth keeping it. As the weeks passed and the button remained blocked I thought for sure that it was over, but I was wrong and happy to be wrong.

That explains why Eddie Lee was playing a request for a listener in Champaign, Illinois the other day then. I did not know they were back online.
