Johnny Randolph interview with Joe Stampley

I was expecting to hear the following information from Joe Stampley when he was interviewed by Johnny Randolph on WAKY in February of this year. Can anyone offer some insight on this?

The Uniques were an American rock band based in Louisiana with Joe Stampley at the helm. They were active from about 1965 to 1970, recording most of their material at Robin Hood Studios, located in Tyler, Texas. They released their material on Paula Records of Shreveport, Louisiana. Their two biggest hits were "Not Too Long Ago" and "All These Things", which Stampley would re-record in his country solo career and take to the top of the charts. The song "All These Things" was written by a newscaster in Louisville, Kentucky, named Tom Maxedon, written as a love song for his wife Carrie. In a time of need for supplemental income, Maxedon sold the rights to the song for $200 to an unknown producer making his rounds around the radio stations. The song hit the charts in 1966, and Maxedon's home station, WAKY in Louisville, began playing the song in their regular rotation in respect to Maxedon. The song became a nightly staple on WAKY, regularly one of their top-requested songs each night for over 10 years. The song stayed in the top 40 for just a few weeks nationwide, but was a local phenomenon in Louisville for over a decade. The song "You Ain't Tuff" was also featured on the Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era collection.

Paul, I was thinking that Johnny would touch on much of this as well but he and Joe go way back and I know that such interviews can eat up time very quickly; especially, when one also has to allow time for news, weather, spots and even relevant songs during the interview. There's just never enough time to get as much as you would like into a single interview.

Yeah, I can understand that there are behind the scenes things that we the listeners don't see, but still there is that Waky connection in Tom Maxedon. It just seems that Johnny missed an opportunity to add a little bit of spice to the interview. I've tried to contact Johnny directly from the 103 Waky web page, but he hasn't responded. Since I haven't heard from him, I'm not going to press the issue.

I gave the interview another listen and I really believe Johnny had the Maxidon connection in mind when he asked Stampley how did he come across the song. As Stampley began telling of how he had heard Art Neville's version back in '61 or '62 on WNOE (a station in New Orleans where Gary Burbank had once been Program Director after leaving WAKY in the mid '70s) I felt that this was setting the stage for Johnny to tell the Tom Maxidon story, but the interview veered off to the country version of "All These Things" which involved the late Larry Baunach of ABC/Dot Records. Larry had been a very close friend of Johnny's for years and had even introduced Johnny to Fran (Johnny's wife of 27 years) so while I agree that Johnny missed an opportunity to wow WAKY listeners with the story of how former WAKY newsman Tom Maxidon had written the ever popular "All These Things," I can certainly understand how the interview turned as it did and time ran out.

Be easy on Johnny. These days he's a member of AARP. LOL!!

Actually, I shouldn't laugh, I'm a member as well.

How freaky is that? You're a legendary WAKY DJ who is now a member of AARP and your once teeny-bopper listeners are AARP members as well. That's really gotta be scary.
