One of the things that made WAKY's presentation so good were the stagers recorded by Bob Todd. His voice wasn't really deep and it wasn't high. It just said "radio" when you heard it. His stagers were simple liners such as "(boom) 5 years ago today" and worked so well regardless of whether they were played right before or during an oldie's intro. The stagers can be heard all over the airchecks that are on this site and Weird Beard even used them on WBBF in Rochester, New York.
My favorite Bob Todd stager appears to be missing from the set featured on the jingles page. It said, "W-A-K-Y Number One Then... (boom) Number One Now." Talk about something so simple yet it made going into the number one tune so much more exciting. I noticed that Weird Beard had Gary Burbank record that one for use on WBBF in Rochester, and it's probably because Bob's version says the WAKY call letters. God love Gary Burbank and that Gary Owens type voice, but the WBBF version just doesn't get it the way Bob Todd's original does.
Still, you can hear the original Bob Todd version on the airchecks page. Look under Weird Beard for:
January 1971 Off-The-Board Aircheck #1
Bob Todd's #1 Now/Then stager occurs at 1:24 into the check and it's quite clean in this off-the-board aircheck.
'Nuff Said. I'm gone.
