I remember around 1978 or so there was a late night talk show on WAKY where the host would talk about Satan, gays, and all kind of topics. Does anyone remember this? And who was it?

That had to be Mike Griffin. He was one evil dude in those days. He did the entire talk show in candlelight, with pentagrams displayed all over the place, and would constantly play 'Cathy's Clown' (Everly Brothers) backwards in hopes of finding satanic subliminal messages. Oh, and those dead cats in the alley behind the WAKY studios... I don't even want to go there. Still. I need verification that Mike Griffin is the same guy that you heard back around '78. Go to the airchecks page on this site and scroll down to Mike Griffin. Click on: Mike hosts the WAKY talk show in early '77. Gotta warn you. Mike does some serious ranting in this particular aircheck. Be sure you have a crucifix and some holy water with you before clicking on the link.

In 1978, it could have been Bill Purdom.

True. Several jocks took a turn at hosting the former Mason Dixon Line. I remember tuning in one night and finding Lee Masters hosting the show. He was asking for suggestions on what to name the show since Mason Lee Dixon was no longer with the station. I suggested that it be called 'Rap Line 79' (Hey. It sounded good at the time). Lee actually liked it and went with it, but I don't know for how long it lasted because I was no longer an unemployed high school teen staying up all night (during the summer) for WAKY's 2 AM talk show.
Is it also possible that the station was carrying the syndicated Art Bell program? He covered such topics, but was primarily a UFO-Government-Cover-Up nut.

The talk show I am referring to was a call in show, no music. It was certainly on in the early months of 1978. I remember a topic called "What is the best band ever". The hosts choice was the Rolling Stones. He also had topics like "Exorcism", "Is there a hell?" etc.etc. I just remember it and thought I would ask.

Art Bell wasn't syndicated in the '70s. The only syndicated overnight show we had back then was Larry King on Mutual. Do-doop.

Wow. I'm starting to think that some of these guys have been around forever (probably because I'm starting to feel as if I've been around forever). Art Bell was still on the planet Zanof, or somewhere, during the '70s.
You're right. About all we had in syndication was old Larry King on the... Mutual... Broadcasting... System (do-doop). He could really stretch that out, but he had a much better sounding voice on radio than he ever did on CNN. On the MBS he would talk low into the mic, but on CNN it's as if he's shouting to the man behind the camera and that leaves his voice sounding as if he has no low end, whatsoever.

One evil comment: Herb Jepko and the NightCaps

Wow. Forgot all about Herb Jepko. And from what I'm seeing on the net he was carried on a Louisville station as early as '74 (station was not identified) and some even say that Jepko's show was eventually carried on the Mutual Broadcasting System, and that it was Larry King who replaced him. Learn something new every day.

All true about Herb Jepko. He was syndicated out of Salt Lake City (was it KSL?) and on WHAS in the mid-70's then did go on Mutual Broadcasting and was later replaced by Larry King. Herb had an older audience and you could always hear commercials for 'Icy Hot' and other products for the maladies of old age.

In regard to someone on the WAKY talk show in '78 with candles and pentagrams, it wasn't me. I left WAKY in '77 and was working at WDRB at the time. There was a period beginning sometime in '74, ending in May of '75 that I did overnights including the WAKY talk show. I never had a lit candle or a pentagram but one night the Demon of Love did make her appearance. One of my 7 or 8 in-studio attendies who participated with her during the show did wind up with the clap (I wisely was true to my wife). That was certainly an evil night that night (especially for Fred), but no pentagrams were involved, just one of the traditional paths to hell. There were shows featuring homosexuals, handicappers, Star Trek experts, psychics, hypnotists, Christians too -- I actually asked one seminary student who was a guest, if Jeus might have been gay since he hung out with all those guys -- that might not have been my finest moment. The night Saigon fell I replayed President Ford's comments and people called in and expressed whatever they wanted about it. Mark Lane who had a popular book about the Kennedy Assination was a guest, the Peace Pilgrim www.peacepilgrim.com was a guest too. But mostly I conducted a free-for-all, it wasn't the easiest thing to get good guests at 2AM. When there were callers who were boring or incurred my wrath and were either machine-gunned, blown-up, or boiled in oil until they screamed. Sometimes I'd sick my dog Satan on them; he was big and mean, probably rabid too. This time was also my Radio Godfather phase that I stole from Larry Glick at WBZ in Boston. People would call and request favors and we would do 'hits' on the air if the Godfather was suitably impressed with the request. After that time I did the show less frequently. Memories of the talk show remain my favorite memories of radio.

I don't know how he managed it, but Mason actually had the Amazing Kreskin on the Mason Dixon Line, as an hour long guest, at 2 or 3 AM back in '71 or '72. He took many questions from callers, such as myself, and ever predicted that I would write about his visit some 34 years later as my 100th post on this message board. (Okay. So I'm full of it. Move on)

I do recall an appearance by Kreskin with MLD after a performance in Louisville. After Weird Beard left MLD did 9p-2a with the talk show at 1A. I believe it was in that time slot that Kreskin was on. Kreskin had a lot to say about Travis. He did predicted that one day Travis would make the following admission "Okay. So I'm full of it." It's uncanny. He also predicted the demise of the Big 79. "Not from external termoil, but from internal strife." Or was that MLD's predcition.
Mille Ruben was a local Psychic who was on the talk show a lot. Don't know if she was on for any of the others who did it but she was on for me. She was Henny Youngman's neice and a nice lady.
She made predictions and you could hear the caller's jaws drop to the floor. Not sure how her overall record was but she did predict my fathers worsening condition and death. I wasn't pleased by that but she was right-on.
Does anyone remember Millie?
