Just letting everyone know, I've started a new internet radio tribute to our beloved Super 79. Actually it's been floating around the etherworld for about a week...the host, Live365, has had a problem with their server and thus I've had a time getting music uploaded. I will give everyone the link once the process is through. It is my intention to use some of the jingles on here, but the server is telling me something is wrong with the format, but hopefully that'll get fixed before too long. If nothing else, I'll get the music running, since I'm paying for it and we ALL know what dead air does to a REAL radio station.
Now for the (possibly) sad news...since I've been informed my hours will be cutback at work with a pending layoff in the future, we may be looking at suspending t-shirt orders for awhile, since both of these endeavors require me to pay upfront. I will try to fill the remainder of the current order (still waiting on a couple more folks to order) so I can take it to the screenprinter. As the number of orders has sharply decreased, it is my feeling most everybody who wanted a t-shirt has one already.
Thanks again for your interest in the shirts and I really look forward to pushing the green button to go online. I will tell you the station will be automated for the time being with jingles and hopefully liners from some familiar voices...maybe an aircheck or two. But I know you folks will show the same outstanding patience you do with the t-shirts!
You guys (and gals!) are so awesome! ;D

We're on the air! Here's the link! www.live365.com/stations/basixdjLike I said, there's just music right now. Jingles will be added, then airchecks, and then hopefully some very special liners!

And just FYI, if the Live365 player comes up and just sits there, you may need to hit the 'play' button. Any other Live 365 station I don't think you have that, but there a few little bugs (not computer bugs!) in the form of operator error I may need to work out. ENJOY!

Okay, apparently what jingles I have on so far ARE working. I just accessed the station through Internet Explorer. As I normally use Mozilla Firefox it may be dependent on what browser I use. I use Firefox as I try to have as little to do with Microsoft as possible, but in this case WAKYOnline comes first. The jingles may be playable on other browsers such as Netscape...I have no idea. This is all a work in progress. If anyone is having problems, let me know. Otherwise, I won't know if problems I'm hearing are because of my computer, the host, or just programming. I think there might be a problem with coming out of the spot break. May have something to do with the jingle still not being in the correct format. I'm working on it, though! THANK YOU!!

Okay, until I can get the ID/music speed issue resolved I've moved the WAKY jingles on WAKYOnline to the beginning of the spot break. This way if anything sounds odd at the outset it's the spot and not your music. And I appreciate the 4 star votes received so far. We're working towards a 5 star station, but we have some awful big shoes to fill by the original!

Just FYI, as is the case right now, Live365 does go down temporarily for weekly maintenance. I just tried to access WAKYOnline, only to find the playlist unavailable. I checked other stations & the same applies. This is not unlike being off the air temporarily.

Some jingles and brief airchecks have been uploaded to WAKYOnline. As the station is in shuffle mode, you just never know what you're gonna get. This also accounts for the 2-3 second gap between segments (songs, ID's, jingles, airchecks) and unfortunately certain songs & artists getting repeated closer than others. But we're tweaking things and are working hard at getting close to the sound you remember!

Be sure to lift "Dig It Louisville" from a Dude Walker Aircheck.
"Nothin' but the finest" from Weird.
Mason Dixon with the "Beautiful People."
You get the idea...put 'em in now and then....

A quick note if you're trying to logon tonight, 10/21/05...Live365 is having problems with their server and have techs working on it. Please be patient and check back...we aren't the only Live365 station experiencing problems. On a positive note, we're excited to be adding live liners from some very familiar voices in the very near future, in addition to adding music and particularly holiday tunes in the coming month!!

I know thi smay make some people mad but here is my request for WAKY Online --DROP THE FREAKIN EAGLES FROM THE PLAYLIST.
They are the most over played BLAND band ever.
P.S. I'll keep listening even if you keep playing them. (Witchy Woman is ok)

Thanks so much for listening, Kevin! Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to find any stations around, regular or internet, that will take a particular artist out of rotation because a few listeners don't like that artist. If that were possible, I would have called Kool 103.5 a long time ago in regards to the Supremes...sorry, don't mean to resurrect that complaint. Listeners can either change the station for the duration of the song, stop listening to that station (both of which I've done to the aforementioned station), or sit through the song. For the first month I had a desk job and was able to monitor the station 8-5, taking songs out of rotation that get played too much since the shuffle mode is used. Unfortunately, my new job does not afford me that opportunity, so I have to monitor it after work. With the new job and in hopes of reducing overkill, I've decided to try firing from both barrels and include the entire playlist. The only exceptions are holiday songs I've started loading and a few 80's hits (I don't really intend to use). But I am glad you're willing to stick it out despite the Eagles. Of course if I had more money I could create a WKLOOnline and we could do like we did back in the day and switch between the two!

Max,
I have noticed you play music from certain time frames in groups. I like that but do you really think the 80's is a proper genre? Who listened to WAKY in the eighties? Wasn't that when they had a oldies format?
Also, I never went over to WKLO when a bad song came on WAKY. I would endure the song and harbor it with resentment and curse the DJ who played it. Sometimes I would make prank calls to that DJ and throw darts at his picture in my garage.
Hehehehe. Just Joking. I'm getting bored here at work.

Kevin, If you noticed in my post I said I didn't intend to use songs from the 80's. I merely downloaded some songs outside the 'WAKY' genre for future use on a separate endeavor. As I've said before, by the 80's I had long before gone to FM, but I have heard some 80's music that I wondered if it did well on the Super 79. Songs like 'Sailing' by Christopher Cross and Neil Diamond songs from 'The Jazz Singer'.
The primary scope for WAKYOnline is the 70's and a portion of the 60's...plus a handful of classics from the late 50's. And any patterns you detect are merely coincidental, by the way. But I've noticed that at times too.
Thanks again for listening. I just added some more music and plan to add even more in the next week or so.
Everybody enjoy!!!

Because for the first time in my life I have the ear of a Programming Director, I am going to keep unabashedly pushing my agenda without shame.
I think the glory days for WAKY 79 was the 1968-1974 range (after the beatles and before disco)--with special emphasis on the 1970-1972 era (which I have heard from many WAKY fans were the best years of the station). Therefore, I think most songs should be in this time frame.
I like complaining in case you haven't noticed.
WAKY-online makes working at the computer less stressful. I will make a donation to help you pay for it if need be. (Hey, isn't that payola?)
P.S. Keep playing the WINGS and BTO, they defined the mid-seventies AM song better than any other bands.

Kevin: What is wrong with the "Glory Days" being the early 60's to be included? Radio was real radio in those days also. I will agree with you regarding to '72. Radio WAS Radio at the Mighty 790 in the early-mid 60's, and continued with the Super 79.

Hi Max and everyone....Personally I think that a few of the early 80's hits would have fit in the WAKY format. I remember hearing Freeze Frame for the first time on WAKY before it went all oldies. And like on the 91 WKLO Reunion tapes, I think it was Mac Hunter that played Van Halen's "Jump" sayiny that if KLO was still on the air that is what it may have been playing. I did enjoy some early 80's hits on WAKY and WKLO.

Thanks for the donation offer...it's not really necessary at this point, but if you or anyone else so chooses, you can use the address on the t-shirt page. Have I thanked listeners lately?? THANK YOU!!

Okay, we've colored outside the lines (WAKY lines, that is) in that you can now find a few TV themes on the radio site. A nice little thing on the side...it's just that, with exception of the themes actually released on record (some of which we have), some of the quality of these themes are not WAKYOnline's CD quality-they came right off of a fan website. They sound as if they were burned right off a low quality TV. Not the best fidelity, but they are memories in their own right. Besides, can we see a show of hands of who has had to watch a snowy black and white TV that only picked up 3, 11, 15, 32 and later 41? (Can I get a witness?)

We just received this e-mail this morning at WAKYOnline:
Was quite surprised when searching around on live365 to find WAKY mentioned. I was in high school in the 50's when the s tation came on. I remember that they played the Purple People eater non-stop for a day or two with no break or announcements of any kind until they started regular broadcasting. Grew up listening to the station until I joined service and always wondered what happened to it. Guess it no longer exists. My time was more the late 50's and early sixties for heavy radio listening. I grew up in Springfield and went to high school in Lousiville area at KentuckyMIlitartyInstitute. I dated a girl from E-town and in fact married her at 19 but it did not last long but I do have many fond memories of those times growiing up in Ky. Have been in florida now for over 30 years. thanks for your web broadcast and will tune in some times to listen. hope you put some stuff on from 50's once in awhile. Bill

I love WAKY-Online MAX but I have to say that you have in some ways become what you say you hate. There are alot of repeats and many oldies are played that have been played to death since the "oldies" age.
These are not complaints --just observations that once you became the PD you now see how hard it is to keep popular songs going without becoming too repetitive. When you first started you had some really fresh stuff from the golden age of WAKY --like the late sixties and early seventies --now your playlist is all over the place.
I like the station alot.

Glad you like the station, Kevin! To the two issues you bring up I've got answers. First of all in regards to the 'repeats'-that, as I've mentioned before in previous posts, is out of my control. The station is in shuffle mode and like your CD changer, you're bound to hear a song again in rotation before you will have heard all the songs. If you go to Live365's 'Community' page you'll see other broadcasters have the same complaint. In monitoring their stations, as I do, they will hear a repeat. There are several songs in our playlist I haven't heard in our 3 months 'on the air'...I don't know if that's because of repeats or they're being played while I'm sleeping. Yes, the instant I started hearing repeats I became aware of the fact I was appearing a hypocrite! To this date, Live365's only response is everytime you do a changeout it resets the playlist, which makes sense...only I've gone a couple of days without touching it and I'll still hear repeats sooner than desired. At first when I had a desk job and could monitor all day, I'd do an immediate changeout if I heard a song more than necessary, but now I can't always monitor. The only way, as I've said before, around that is to actually program 40+ hours of music and with my limited storage space, to keep music fresh by changing out and reprogramming, this would have to almost be my full-time job...which would be cool, only it doesn't pay one red cent! With some of the unresolved complaints and problems we (the broadcasters) have had with Live365, I've started doing research to see if there might not be another carrier who might be cost effective. Think, though, if we were to go with shoutCast or something like that it would be alot more expensive, so I might just need to live with certain things for awhile. Now in regards to the actual playlist, when I first started I was a bit selfish in that I wanted to play primarily the music I personally associated with WAKY (1970-1976). When I saw that severely limited my playlist, I decided to include some late 60's, as well. I then got comments and e-mails from listeners asking if I would consider including music from the early 60's, some wanted the 50's, and still one asked about the early 80's. That's why the playlist, as you say, is 'all over the place'. I sat down and realized what, in effect, these folks were requesting collectively was going to cover the entire lifespan of WAKY's Top 40 life, before they switched to all oldies. That, Kevin, was when I realized this was no longer MY station, and became more of the listeners' station. I wanted to include as much of the entire spectrum without playing too much of what's already overplayed (notice the absence of the Supremes and Herman's Hermits? ) If you have noticed, I've also included TV themes...some of which are of a lesser quality and sound llike they came right off a 13" B&W. This is because not only are we here to resurrect memories of the Super 79, but I'm also striving to resurrect memories...PERIOD!! If I could include spots from WAKY's past, I would. For now I have to rely on spots within airchecks. I hope this addresses your issues sufficiently, and of others' as well. Some of the earlier playlist had to get rotated out temporarily to make room for some Christmas tracks, but rest assured, they will return. By the way, I see what you mean...I'm hearing "Real Love" by the Doobie Brothers for what seems like the umpteenth time right now. I may have to rotate that one out for awhile (cool tune, though). Thanks for listening!!
