In the Mid-60's, the Mighty 790 aired "Silver Souvenirs" from the mid-late 50's. What is wrong with the music of the early -mid 60's? ;D I believe it was mentioned in an interview, that music played was all over the place on WAKY. Wacky aired what the listeners wanted! I enjoy Max's site, even when the late 70's or early 80's air, but do not like a steady diet of those years. With the additional programming, Max is keeping memories alive of which the Super 79 is known for. I can not thank John & Max enough for their work on their sites, both WAKY & Radio WKLO, including WAKY on-line.

Listen for Christmas greetings soon from the likes of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, George Harrison, Christine McVie formerly of Fleetwood Mac, and the Bee Gees. All of these are 'oldies' as well...obviously in regards to George.

On this day, 2 days before our 3 month anniversary on Friday the 9th, I would be amiss if I didn't extend heartfelt gratitude to some people who have and/or are having a big part in WAKYOnline's success:
1. Former jocks who have so graciously supplied or offered to supply liners and holiday liners...thanks so much!
2. My co-workers at Commonwealth Broadcasting Elizabethtown, GM John Wright and Star 107.3's Cat Michaels who have assisted in production duties. In addition they have supplied some of the music resources I've added to the station library recently and you've yet to hear. Thanks for your unselfishness.
3. To my buddy John Quincy for providing the inspiration to start all this, for acting in an advisory status, and for producing a new series of high quality liners and jingles specifically for WAKYOnline just today.
4. To Tim's TV Showcase for some of the television themes you are hearing.
5. To listeners who e-mail their suggestions, questions, and ideas.
6. Lastly, I thank my wife who has had the patience to allow me to, at times, be consumed with this passion I have called radio.
As far as the near future, after the first of the year we should be getting back the full playlist scaled back for Christmas music. As I told Kevin at the Louisville Sun, I am on the constant hunt for 'new' music to add. Hopefully one of two things will happen in '06. Either we will be able to purchase additional storage space or maybe we will be able to make upgrades to the methods we currently employ to broadcast.
Thanks again to all for helping at least try to recreate the Super 79!

Max,
Listening to WAKY online all day while working and the music has been very good. An exeptional day.
Also, to all -- During an aircheck Dude Walker was talking about leaving Louisville and how he thought Louisville was great and that WAKY was great, etc. etc. My only questions is: Why did he leave WAKY if he loved it so much?

Dude got an incredible offer to go to CHUM, a major market Top 40 station in Toronto, Canada. WAKY couldn't come close to matching it. Mrs. Dude would have never forgiven him if he had turned it down.

Thanks for the question Kevin and thank you John for your reply. Even though Memphis is my hometown, I have never lived in a city that I love more than Louisville. Not only did I get to work for the greatest radio station in the country but made many friends as well. I am still in touch with many of them. The reason I left WAKY is as John said an incredible offer. My wife of 41 years has never interferred with my professional life but with one child and one on the way, I was offered $30,000 more a year than I was making at WAKY and my wife begged me to take the job. I turned them down for several months but when they made their final offer, I had to take it. WAKY and Louisville will always be the best time of my life. I loved them then and I love them today. I honestly hope I can move back there someday after my grandson is old enough to remember his papa. He is the love of my life so I will be in Memphis for a while. Have a Merry Christmas, Dude Walker

Thanks for the answer, Dude.
So I take it that DJ's are like free agents meaning they (of course) go for the top offer and if another station needs a good DJ then they will shop--Right?
Does anyone know what the average Jock made back then (1970's) and what they make now? What was a "TOP OFFER" like back then? And if you know --what does a top jock make now?
I guess contracts have time spans are signed? Right?
Did jocks ever have unions?

I can't tell you anything about salaries, but there is/was a union for radio people. AFTRA, it it still exists.

In John Quincy's "WAKY Remembered," Johnny Randolph states that Coyote Calhoun was offered $400 a week to come to WAKY back in the early '70s. That seems like an awful lot for back then, but I believe that is what he said. I'll have to check the recording again.

Just received an e-mail from someone on another forum I belong to...they told me live365 said the station was not available. I went via the link he used and got the same result (why, I have no clue), but if anyone ever has difficulties accessing this station, please let me know...it's a very busy server, but it still should not be difficult. Just e-mail me or send me a pesonal message.
Oh-the other guy's remedy? If you ever get the message he did, type WAKYOnline in the 'Stations Playing...' box. It'll take you straight there. You may have to invent a user ID and password, but other than that, it's simple, it's free, and it's spam-free!
And now you can hear liners from Johnny Randolph, Jason O'brian, Dude Walker, Gary Burbank, our own John Quincy and we've just added Coyote Calhoun! Actually we added Coyote and Jason this week!

This e-mailed from Suzi Drumright, a listener from Tennessee:
Hey Max,
My co-worker, Nikki, and I would just like to say the music selection is JAMMIN' today. Keep up the great work. We got our WAKY on!
One question, is this a live broadcast or pre-recorded. Nikki would like to hear "Hopelessly Devoted" by Olivia Newton John. (Not my choice...lol)

Suzi also gave us our first request...which we've accommodated! Junk Food Junkie? Would love to hear it. Great format!(Actually, Kevin was the first to request it and when she gave it to us a second time, we figured we'd better get on the stick! Thanks to Kevin and Suzi both!) Can you play "Junk Food Junkie" You guys remember that one? Suzi also writes: I found your station on Live365 internet radio just Monday (January 9th) as a matter of fact. No memories of WAKY in it's heyday as I was born in 1970. I did ask my dad but he hadn't heard of it either. Probably couldn't pick it up in lower East TN. I have always loved that "classic" 70's and 60's rock and your station is great. I have an LP of "Funky Favorites" that had all those crazy songs like Junk Food Junkie (Spiders and Snakes, My Ding-a-Ling, Snoopy and the Red Baron, etc.) Oh the good ol' days.... My husband bought me the Time Life 70's CD set for Christmas last year, but it's impossible to get every great song on any collection. Besides, it's always more enjoyable to hear it on a station format, it means someone else is a fan too. Have a great day.
Thanks, Suzi, for listening!!

And just FYI, if the Live365 player comes up and just sits there, you may need to hit the 'play' button. ENJOY! Just a reminder if, like Dude Walker yesterday, you have a problem where you log-in fine and are looking at the player window, but hear nothing, try: - Clicking on the green play arrow...trust me, it has nothing to do with making you a VIP. You have to go through alot more steps before they can get your money! Until you become a VIP, listening is still free. All becoming a VIP does is it enables you to listen commercial-free.
- If this doesn't work, try re-booting.
- Ensure your browser will allow you access. Internet Explorer and Firefox work, for sure.
...and finally
- If you still have problems, let me know so we can get it fixed!
If folks are having problems, I need to know about it so we can rectify it. Let me know how I can help you!

Live365 is running an ad on WAKYOnline and all their stations by Democraticmatch.com. This does not express the views of WAKYOnline, nor were we responsible for airing it.

WAKYOnline now has it's own domain and can now be accessed going to www.wakyonline.com . Of course you can still access the station from the 79waky.com homepage or from the link below. In addition to the second address, e-mails and requests can now also be sent to max@wakyonline.com, as well as from the station page.

If you gain access via the domain www.wakyonline.com you bypass the whole userID/password process! **At least I think. I believe you have to do it at least once and I believe afterwards that's it**

Nowadays you can't go into many businesses that don't have a mission statement posted. It's pretty much a fad, these days and if a company doesn't have one, they soon will. I guess there's a reason, that is to keep employees abreast of why they are there. I digress, but only for a moment.
As WAKYOnline turns 6 months old this month, we have learned just as much in the last 3 months as the first 3. But one thing in common, is the real reason is not to enjoy music, although we do, and not just to hear old jocks, which we do, but the real reason is to rekindle memories we all share of the Super 79. From time to time, we get e-mails from listeners and messages on this board that remind us of our main reason for being here.
You can hear the music anywhere...you can hear airchecks and jingles on this site...but to hear it all put together may cause some folks to hark back for more than just a minute. We've taken a few liberties outside the WAKY realm and have added a few retro commericials, TV theme songs, and even some specialty programming here and there. This is no secret to most who have listened (at this writing, there are even plans in the coming months for WAKY Fast Forward, a program of various editions highlighting past WAKY hitmakers with updates, including a more recent recording). But when we get an e-mail like the one that follows from an out of state former Kentuckiana resident...well it just makes our hearts warm. So on behalf of Cat, John Q, Kerry, and myself thank you for listening and to echo all the jocks who have given us liners, "glad to do it!"
I am so glad to know that this radio station is still out there and going strong. I am from Louisville and grew up there in the 50's and 60s'. I used to sit on my porch in the summer time and listen to the radio station and dream someday of being on the radio myself. I left there and moved to the Washington DC area in 1966 after 9th grade graduation. The one thing I really missed was the radio station WAKY. I recently purchased a new car with XM Radio and had it on the 60's station one day and heard someone say WAKY out of Louisville, Kentucky and I was in absolute AWE......I felt like it took me back in time. Since that day I got XM Radio Online and started trying to figure out when I would hear WAKY online. I then decided to check online to see if I could hear it online and found it through Google. Thank you guys so much for staying there. It really takes me back in time to listen to the station. As I write this e-mail I am listening to the station online.
Anita Meyer Stafford, Virginia
So OUR mission statement is, as our motto says, Serving Kentuckiana...and beyond! The emphasis is on the serving. As the Duke said during my recent visit with him, it matters not what ratings are or whether or not what you do on the air makes money, but it's the listeners...the people who count. He said he didn't care one bit about what ratings are. I believe he also said words to this effect to Stephen Lee Cook on one of his recent visits. This is why we chose to make it free to listen to and we only charge cost for WAKY/WKLO t-shirts.
To know we've helped a dislocated Louisvillian make a (re)connection is a blessing not just for the receiver, but for the giver, as well.
Thanks, Anita!

There are new programming additions this weekend. In addition to the debut of WAKY Fast Forward, there are additional airchecks by Coyote Calhoun, Bill Bailey, and Mason Lee Dixon, plus a Ben Snyder spot by Dude Walker.
Incidentally, do let us know what you think of the idea behind WAKY Fast Forward. It's an idea we had while thinking of the old VH-1 program "8-track Flashback". It's a program that, were WAKY still on the air today, they might have come up with. While the inaugural edition is a little rough around the edges (much of it was done late night/early morning amidst the fading effects of Mountain Dew), future editions promise to improve. But let us know via e-mail whether or not you like it and if you think we should keep it, because it is experimental.
These additions are just the beginning of what's coming down the pike, as by fall we will once again be purchasing more storage space to have more vintage WAKY programming, airchecks (including older ones from the 60's) and music variety!
After all, it's all for you.

Max: Your tag line of "Its For You" brings back memories. Started humming the jingle with "It's For You!, It's For You...." from the All Heart jingle package , which we usually aired, I believe February, Heart Month. I am not going to say that Ole Rudy aired it outside of Heart Month. The Fun Times at the Mighty 790!

This weekend live365 updated their servers, thereby freezing several of the station accounts. As a result there was a small section of our playlist 'preserved' for repeat. We apologize for this, particularly if you dislike hearing "Come Together" by Aerosmith repeatedly. I will pull it for awhile this evening.
